10 Tips for shopping whole foods on a budget



If I had a penny for every time I heard, “I can’t eat healthy, because I can’t afford it,”  I would be rich!
I GET IT! I have sympathy, however…..
the truth is, YOU CAN afford it!
There are always ways to cut costs in your life, not to mention shop smart when it comes to healthy whole foods!
It may take some work, some planning, some extra stops…. but seriously YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!
and believe me, YOU ARE WORTH IT!
IF you don’t spend the money on your WELLNESS, you will spend it trying to get your health back!
When there is a will, there IS A WAY! 
I suggest, eating properly, and spending the money where it matters, so you don’t have to spend it in the doctors office, on pills, insulin, and trying to get well!































TIPS FOR SHOPPING ON A BUDGET 


1.Shop in season-

Try to shop seasonal veggies and fruits!  It will keep your costs down.  Often times grocery stores will import from local farms even! Stay in tuned with seasonal produce! It not only is cheaper, but higher in nutrients!

2.Shop farmers markets/local if possible-

I am all about supporting local farmers!  Not only because I love to support local businesses and entrepreneurs, but because truthfully you will get the best for your money!  Highest quality nutrients coming straight from the farm! No shelf life, and its wallet friendly!

3.Hit up ALDI and discount grocery stores-

Aldi and other discount stores seriously have great stuff! Aldi is my favorite! They have seriously stepped up their game! You can find all kinds of great food, spices, sauces, produce here!
They have organic produce, sprouted grain, and a ton of gluten free options at a discount!

4.SHOP IN BULK when you can-

BULK can save you money!  But be wise where you buy the bulk!  If you buy too much product it will go bad! So Bulk up on Nuts, Meats (you can freeze), quinoa, seasoning, grains, beans, lentils, chicken stock.  These are all great ways to save big!

5.Don’t buy ALL ORGANIC-

Don’t buy organic when you don’t need to!  Check out my dirty dozen list!

6.Stock up on FROZEN foods-

Frozen fruits and veggies are AWESOME!  They are a great money and time saver! All of my fruit I throw into my smoothies are straight from the frozen food section!

7.Don’t be afraid of store brand-

Seriously, store brands have picked up their game!  Don’t be afraid to buy the store name, they are literally the SAME exact thing!  If you question it, compare the labels!

8.Become a leftover queen- eliminate food waste-

My secret sauce to make lunch super easy and eliminate food waste, is to make a little more dinner and eat the rest for lunches!
This makes my lunch mindless, and also helps me to not waste !
Another left over tip is FREEZE what you don’t eat!
This makes for a quick meal on nights you forget to cook, or are just too busy to make a home made meal !
A win win all around if you ask me!

9.Say NO to buying drinks-

Seriously, JUST DO NOT BUY ANY DRINKS!
Stick to the good old H2O! It will save money, and save your gut!

10. Meal plan and STICK TO THE LIST-

Meal planning, helps you to stay focused through the week on what you will eat! It will help eliminate unnecessary food intake, as well as food purchases!
When you MEAL PLAN, create a grocery list off of it. THEN DO NOT DEVIATE!
Seriously, STICK TO THE FOOD ON THE LIST! THAT IS IT!!

Where do you spend most of your money?
Do you get your nails done? Hair done? Do you stop for coffee every day? Do you go out to eat with friends? Do you grab drinks on the weekend? Do you grab snacks at the convenient store? Do you stop for fast food? Do you buy unnecessary trinkets?

WHERE IS YOUR MONEY GOING?
I promise you, almost EVERYONE can cut somewhere, in order to FEED THEIR HEALTH!

Here it is, as honest as I can be.
YOU HAVE ONE BODY! ONE CHANCE to feed your body health or death.
You are in control of 90% of your health.  Only 10% is left up to genetics.

WILL YOU keep making excuses not to take care of yourself, eat properly, and truly dig your own grave with your spoon and fork?
or
WILL YOU find a way!
Be responsible, and respect and honor your body?
Will you make YOURSELF worth it!?

I think you are worth it! I think your health is worth it!

There are a few things on life, I will not cut corners or cost on.  One of those being my health!
You better believe I will do everything I need to, in order to stay healthy and well for not only myself, but for my kids !

It is worth it to me not getting my nails done, not grabbing a coffee every time I am out, not buying that new hand bag, so I can be healthy!  So I am well, energized, have a clear mind, and am fit enough to be able to run around and enjoy my kids for many, many years!

Life or death is on the end of your spoon or fork.  Only you get to choose what you do with that 90%. Feed wellness, or feed sickness!

If you are going to cut cost somewhere, don’t let it be on your health!
Be smart in your health choices not just for your wallets sake, but for a long fulfilling life!

Fit & Clean Week

This post goes out to all of you who follow me and my fitness journey but are not quite sure you want to commit to a full month of clean eating, 30 minute exercises, meal planning, and starting a new lifestyle!! I totally understand – it looks super overwhelming in the beginning, but I PROMISE it gets easier and I am by your side every step of the way!!  I absolutely love clean eating and I started my journey to improving my health just 4 years ago!  I can say that I not only have lost body fat and toned up but I have totally transformed our families life with the way we are eating.  I am really excited to share with you a brand new tool to help you start understanding the basics of clean eating, introducing yourself to exercise with under 30 minutes a day just 4x a week and a sampler of Shakeology if you would like to give that a try!
The good news is Beachbody’s newest program, CLEAN WEEK, launches October 9th and it lets you “try on” a healthy lifestyle for just 7 days, no strings attached!!!

How does Clean Week work?


 Clean Week is a 7-day fitness and nutrition program designed to introduce you to a healthy lifestyle with new super trainer Megan Davies. You will get 4 workouts, a step-by-step meal planner, and a week’s supply of delicious Shakeology.

The Workouts

Clean Week comes with four 30-minute workouts: cardio, strength, core function, and flexibility. These workouts will be available for FREE on Beachbody on Demand starting October 3rd. You do not need to be a member to access these workouts. The only equipment required is a set of dumbbells for the strength workout. There will be an intensifier available if you want to kick up your workout a notch!!

The Nutrition Plan

There is NO calorie counting in this program!! You will receive a step-by-step meal planner that breaks it all down for you with delicious, nutritious foods and a sample supply of Shakeology. Packed with all the nutrients, vitamins, and protein that you need, Shakeology will help curb your cravings and boost your immunity. Pumpkin Spiced Latte Energy Bites


The base of these protein bites starts with instant oats and protein powder. Instant oats are also known as “quick-cooking” or “one-minute” oats, and they’re sold in canisters right next to the old-fashioned oats at the grocery store. I’ve started to prefer instant oats in my energy bites because they’re smaller and thinner than old-fashioned oats, so they have a more pleasing texture.
When making this recipe, I tested it with this plant-based protein powder. It’s relatively inexpensive, and I buy it online here. You may substitute other plant-based protein powders, but remember that not all protein powders absorb liquids equally! You may need to add a touch more protein powder if the mixture seems really wet or a hint more pumpkin if the mixture seems too dry.
Note: Do NOT substitute whey-based protein powders. The energy bites will not set, and the mixture will be very sticky and gooey.
 
Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte Energy Bites -- they taste just like the Starbucks drink! Only 100 calories & 12g of protein!
 
For the latte flavor, you’ll dissolve instant coffee into pumpkin purée. Just regular ol’ pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie mix! (Pumpkin pie mix contains refined sugar, which we’re avoiding in this healthy recipe.)  You’ll also use it to make my pumpkin spice latte protein overnight oats! It requires quite a bit of stirring for the instant coffee to fully dissolve, so be patient. And of course, it wouldn’t be a PSL without the spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger!
To sweeten your energy bites, you’ll use one of my favorite ingredients: vanilla crème stevia. Stevia is a plant-based, no-calorie sweetener that’s clean eating friendly, and it’s highly concentrated. You just need ½ teaspoon for this entire recipe! This is the kind that I buy because I love its warm flavor and don’t notice any strange aftertastes like with some other stevia products. You can find it at many health-oriented grocery stores, but I usually buy mine online here

  1. Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the protein powder, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. In a separate bowl, stir together the pumpkin, instant coffee, and stevia until the coffee has fully dissolved. (It may require a few minutes of stirring!) Add in the oat mixture, mixing until everything is fully incorporated.
  3. Divide the mixture into 30 equal portions. Working with one portion at a time, roll the mixture into a small sphere, and place on the prepared baking sheet. Transfer the bites to an airtight container, and refrigerate until ready to eat.
Notes: This recipe was specifically designed for the plant-based protein powder listed in the Ingredients list. I buy it here. Most protein powders behave differently, especially when it comes to absorbing moisture. If you substitute a different plant-based protein powder, you may need to add more protein powder if the dough is too wet OR more pumpkin purée (or a small amount of milk) if the dough is too dry. Do not substitute whey-based protein powder; the bites will be too sticky to roll and won't set.

If you prefer, 1¾ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice may be substituted for the cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.

I highly recommend using the instant coffee granules, if possible. In a pinch, you may substitute extra-strong brewed coffee, but you’ll need to reduce the amount of pumpkin by about double the amount of coffee that you use to compensate for the added liquid.

Any sweetener may be substituted in place of the vanilla crème stevia. However, you may need to adjust the amount of protein powder if the dough is too wet OR add more pumpkin if the mixture is too dry. You’ll need the equivalent of 6-8 tablespoons of granulated sugar. (I highly recommend using the vanilla crème stevia, if at all possible! I buy it here
